Trip to Riga: Day 1 - Arrival in the Old Town

(For other trips click here.)
A trip to Latvia's capital Riga is a short and reasonably affordably weekend holiday if you live in mid-Sweden. One hours time difference and 1h10min flighttime is all that is needed to touch down in what is both similar and quite different to Stockholm and its old town (Gamla Stan).
Touch down in Latvia and the first thought is that the nature is very Swedish, which is quite reasonable as we share the same Baltic sea. I also loved the taxi free wifi. ;-)

Tallink hotel is also of the kind of standard we are used to from a reasonable good hotel in Sweden. (Nerds: Wifi is 20 Mbit/s). We walk downtown to the Old Town and then return another way. Central Riga is a mixture of run down classical building facades that you find in central Stockholm or most European capitals, in a good way. This is combined with an interesting number of monuments and buildings that imply the cold war heritage, even though it is not so evident as I have seen in other places. There seems to be a larger number of wooden buildings in areas too, often run down, but because of that something I would like to spy out more.

Music festival this weekend but we were to tired to sit and watch. And happy anyway.

House of Blackheads, a Hanseatic house originally from 1334 but destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt in 1999.
